The second prequel in the Left Behind series further develops the series characters. We get to know Rayford and his state of discontent; his wife, Irene, and her passion for the Lord; and their daughter, Chloe, who's in the midst of teen rebellion. Richard Ferrone narrates with an even pace and vocalizes character differences through tone and inflection. His depiction of Carpathia and his rise to power subtly contrasts Carpathia's private evil nature with his public persona of seeming good. However, Ferrone's characterizations of the children fall flat and jar the listener from the story. Still, the in-depth portrayals of the major players give a sense of familiarity and leave us wanting more. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine
